A. Nevitt Construction is building a well insulated, air tight building, designed to make the best possible use of daylight and sunlight, whilst ensuring that the building will not overheat in summer. The building will impact as little on the environment as possible, both in terms of the energy it uses and construction materials.
The building is sited to make as much use of solar gain as possible and the thermal mass of the heavy- weight construction will be used to store passive solar energy while, plenty of openable windows will en- sure fresh air.
The energy consumption of the building will be reduced, because it is highly insulated and airtight, with controlled ventilation.
Energy efficient lights and appliances will be used. CO2 emissions will be reduced by the careful choice of heating system, a condensing gas boiler.
The building envelope will be insulated as much as possible with plywood, etc. Double glazed windows, with low E glass to as high a specification as possible, will be fitted.
The heating and hot water system will be well controlled,so that it will be able take advantage of milder weather conditions or localised solar gain.
A radiant heating system ( under-floor heating)will be installed. Due to the low flow and return temperatures of this type of heating system, a condensing boiler will always be working in condensing mode, thus optimising its efficiency.
The boiler, hot water store and hot water outlets will be located near to each other and the primary pipe work between the boiler and hot water cylinder will be insulated throughout its entire length. A solar water heating system will be installed on the south facing roof.
Low flush, dual flush Wcs will be fitted and aerated heads on basin taps and shower heads will also be fitted. A shower fed from the boiler will be installed.
